WisDOT’s I-894 Freeway Project Receives AASHTO 2026 Regional America’s Transportation Award
Congratulations to WisDOT and the contractor-consultant team on receiving a 2026 America’s Transportation Award from AASHTO for the I-894 resurfacing project in the Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Medium Project category.
The America’s Transportation Awards program recognizes transportation projects from across the country that improve safety, mobility, and quality of life through innovative solutions. The I-894 project was selected as a regional winner and was Wisconsin’s only project to receive this recognition.

The award was driven by the project’s innovative construction approach. Rather than relying solely on traditional lane closures, project teams used full directional weekend freeway closures and echelon paving, allowing multiple paving machines to work side by side. This strategy helped crews complete major work more quickly, improve safety for workers and motorists, reduce costs, and minimize the overall impact on travelers.
With the regional win, the project advances to the national competition, where top-scoring projects from each region are considered for the program’s highest honors, including the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award.
CORRE is honored to have worked as part of a consultant team to provide construction oversight services on the project, including all-encompassing HMA oversight, material coordination, density testing, and PWL coordination and documentation.
