I-41/43/894 Airport Freeway

As part of a collaborative team led in partnership with WisDOT, CORRE provided construction oversight and inspection services for the complex rehabilitation of the award-winning I-894 Airport Freeway project from 84th Street to 35th Street and reconstruction of the Loomis Road (STH 36) bridge over I-894.

This multi-year improvement project involved reconstructing the shoulders of I-894; concrete base patching; resurfacing the freeway mainline and ramps; improving drainage systems; enhancing lighting and signing; and a full reconstruct of the Loomis Road bridge, ramps, and intersections. Pavement and maintenance for four local roads were also a part of this diverse project.

The project team solved numerous, extensive issues arising during grading operations and drainage system installation. CORRE facilitated communication between various teams to effectively resolve issues discovered in the field. Staff also maintained a safe site for the traveling public, construction staff, and contractors by proactively adjusting traffic control throughout the life of the project.

Key project components included staged construction, extensive storm sewer rehabilitation, grading operations, concrete barrier wall, base patching, temporary and permanent signing, temporary and permanent lighting, HMA pavement, concrete pavement, erosion control, two intersections with five freeway ramps, bridge painting, PPC overlays, sign structures, bridge maintenance, concrete surface repair, and curb and gutter. CORRE provided all-encompassing HMA oversight, material coordination, density testing, and PWL coordination and documentation.

AASHTO awarded WisDOT a regional 2026 America’s Transportation Award for the project in the ‘Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Medium Project’ category. The project is now eligible for a national award.
