Official Ceremony Held at the 2024 ACEC-WI Transportation Improvement Conference
We are excited to announce that the CTH S Reconstruction and Reconditioning project in Vilas County won WisDOT’s Best Local Program Project award as part of the 2024 DTSD Excellence in Design Awards Program.
CORRE provided design services for this 3-mile-long project from CTH K to East Flowage Lake Road. This design improved safety by significantly realigning CTH S to remove blind curves and improve sight distances. The project’s location allowed for complete relocation of the corridor into the adjacent County Forest land in order to adequately address the safety concerns.

The design team coordinated with Vilas County, the Town of Conover, and the Vilas County Forestry department through the design process. Portions of the existing alignment were turned over to the Town and other areas of the roadway were obliterated and returned to the Forestry Department. Public involvement also included recreational groups and other agencies.
Extensive environmental coordination was required due to the need for stream realignment and culvert replacements. The undersized culvert was replaced with a larger structure with a natural stream bottom for natural fish passage. The stream was also realigned at this location to improve connectivity and to allow the existing channel to function as a bypass during construction. CORRE completed Section 106 documentation, agency coordination, and wetland delineation.
