This project was an interstate interchange replacement to accommodate the future six-lane expansion of IH 94. The new bridge overpass was lengthened, raised, and widened, and was built in two separate halves with an epoxy polymer deck overlay. All four ramps were realigned, raised, and lengthened requiring significant excavation below subgrade (EBS) through wetlands. The approaches consisted of two concrete pavement roundabouts with colored concrete truck aprons and storm sewer.
This project also added a park and ride lot, lighting, Freeway Traffic Management System (FTMS) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The most challenging phase of the project came during a 21-day full closure when all the new ramps and approaches had to be constructed and reopen to traffic. Contractors and engineering staff worked around the clock, seven days a week, to complete the work on schedule.
